Man charged with murder, sexual assault in court for preliminary exam Friday

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – A man charged with robbing and killing a 59-year-old man at a bus stop in Highland Park will be in court Friday for a preliminary examination.

Malcolm Benson is facing charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery, criminal sexual conduct and felony firearm second offense. He is scheduled to be in court at 1:30 p.m.

Benson is charged with fatally shooting Stanley Johnson at a bus stop on Sept. 16 and sexually assaulting a woman in the same area shortly before the shooting.

He was arraigned on Sept. 25 on charges of felony murder, armed robbery, criminal sexual conduct and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He's also charged as a habitual offender, having been convicted of murder more than 20 years ago. He served 21 years in prison and was released in January. He was living in a halfway house in the city.

At the arraignment, Benson disputed the criminal sexual conduct charge. Judge Brigette Officer-Hill repeated the charge.

"That's bull****," Benson said.

A not guilty plea was entered. He is being held without bond at the Wayne County Jail.
