Man dead, another hurt in drive-by shooting on Detroit's east side

Cops: Shooter aimed rifle at crowd outside Super Star Market, started shooting

DETROIT – One man is dead and another person is hurt after they were shot as they walked down the sidewalk on Detroit's east side.

The shooting happened before 7 p.m. Saturday outside Super Star Market on Joseph Campau Street, just east of Interstate 75.

Police said a 59-year-old man was shot in the leg and a 23-year-old man was killed in the drive-by shooting.

The 23-year-old man apparently knew the people in the vehicle. Some sort of argument may have led to the shooting.

A man sitting in the back seat of a vehicle aimed a rifle at the crowd and started shooting, police said. The 23-year-old man was struck in the back of the head.

A witness said he saw a group of people rush to the injured man as they called police.

Capt. Tim Leach, of Detroit police, said surveillance video will be extremely helpful. He credits the chief for talking to business owners in the area and convincing them to invest in security cameras.

Police are still searching for the shooter and the driver of the vehicle.
