Man dies in attempted carjacking at gas station on 8 Mile Road

Gas station surveillance video captures incident that killed man, injured woman

DETROIT – Carjackings continue to plague the city of Detroit, and on Saturday, that trend continued, costing one man his life and leaving a woman badly injured. The carjacker is still at large.

The incident happened Saturday evening at a gas station at 8 Mile Road and Dequindre Road.

Gas station surveillance video first showed the carjacker trying to have a conversation with the woman. She ignored him and went back to the vehicle, but the suspect followed.

Words were exchanged and there was a tussle between the suspect and the man. Five shots are fired.

Police said 47-year-old Leslie White was taken by surprise. He was killed sitting in the driver's seat.

Witnesses helped 21-year-old Shaneqwa Carr, who was shot in the leg as she tried running away.

Police believe the gunman used a revolver. However, there were no shell casings at the crime scene.

Police said they are looking for young black man with a thin build who was last seen running down an alley south toward Marx Street and getting into a Buick Rendezvous.

The victim's mother said she heard gunshots and saw the man fleeing the area. However, at the time she did not know he was her son's killer.

Police said the gas station has state-of-the-art technology and are hoping the surveillance video will help identify the man.
