Man dies in crash on Interstate 94 near Van Dyke

DETROIT – A 22-year-old man was killed over the weekend on Interstate 94 in a crash with a suspected drunken driver.

Michigan State Police said Andre Thurmond's Chevrolet Impala was stopped early Saturday morning on the right shoulder of the eastbound lanes near Van Dyke when it was hit by a Mercedes-Benz.

The Mercedes-Benz had been propelled into Thurmond's car after being rear-ended by a GMC pickup, police said.

The driver of the pickup was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz fled the scene on foot, but police said they found open alcohol bottles in the car.

Thurmond was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in his car suffered minor injuries.
