Man bound over for trial in shooting of 7-year-old Detroit boy

DETROIT – A man accused of shooting a 7-year-old boy on Detroit’s east side is due in court Thursday morning for a preliminary hearing.

Torrey Craft, 24, is charged with three counts of attempted murder and felony firearms violations. Craft turned himself in to police after he was named as a person of interest.

The shooting was reported at 10:45 p.m. Aug. 16 in the 3600 block of Fairview Street.

Preliminary hearing

The witness to take the stand was Calvin Arnold, the father of the boy who was shot. Arnold was at the scene of the shooting and said that two men shot at the group of men on Fairview Street. He said that one man had his face covered. He identified the second man as Craft.

He talked briefly about the boy’s recovery.

What happened

Craft is accused of firing shots after an argument with his girlfriend.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Craft had argument Aug. 15 with relatives of the mother of his 4-year-old daughter after they refused to let him into their home. Craft returned the next day to the housing complex and fired shots in the direction of the same relatives, striking the boy in the thigh, authorities said.

“We got a phone call that the suspect, his name is Torrey Craft, and his girlfriend, lives at this location and they got into an argument yesterday – girlfriend-boyfriend drama,” Detroit police Deputy Chief Renee Hall said. “He threatened to come back. He made good on his threat. When he came back, he fired a shot.”

Police said they found bullet casings from two different weapons at the scene. Hall said an assault rifle was used in the shooting, as well as a .40-caliber weapon, with which he fired at least seven shots.

The boy was taken to the hospital and survived.
