Man in custody after armed robbery in Monroe

MONROE, Mich. – A man is in custody after an armed robbery and brief foot pursuit early Saturday in Monroe.

The armed robbery occurred at the Subway restaurant on Monroe Street shortly after midnight.

The man implied he had a handgun during the robbery, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies assisted the Monroe Police Department with searching for the robber who was described as a white man in his 30s with reddish hair and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

A man fitting the description was seen in an alley near West Third and Harrison streets. When deputies shined a spotlight on him, he immediately began running.

After a foot pursuit, the 34-year-old man was apprehended and was found to have a large amount of cash on him.

He was turned over to the Monroe Police Department and was later lodged at the Monroe County Jail.
