Man killed in head-on crash with Detroit bus on Gratiot Avenue

DETROIT – A man was killed when his SUV crashed into a Detroit Department of Transportation bus Thursday morning on Gratiot Avenue. 

Detroit police said the crash happened about 6:30 a.m. on Gratiot Avenue near Jane Avenue on the city's east side. His vehicle collided head-on with the bus. Police said he was pronounced dead at the crash scene. 

There were eight passengers on the DDOT bus at the time of the crash. Five people on the bus suffered minor injuries. 

Police said the SUV was traveling northbound on Gratiot Avenue and the bus was in the far right southbound lane. Witnesses said the SUV suddenly veered into the southbound lanes and struck the bus head-on. 

Police are working to determine what could have forced the man the veer into oncoming traffic.
