Man shoots would-be car thief outside gas station at 12 Mile, Van Dyke in Warren

Car hits pole, person flees on foot after being shot in neck

WARREN, Mich. – Someone who was trying to steal a car outside the Marathon gas station at 12 Mile Road and Van Dyke was shot by the car owner Friday morning. 

The gas station clerk said a customer left his Dodge Challenger running outside as he went to pay inside just before 4 a.m. When he was inside he looked out the window and saw someone in his car. 

The customer ran outside and fired two shots at the person in his car, who was struck in the neck. The car ended up hitting a pole as the person jumped out of the window and fled on foot. 

The shooter was taken away by police to be questioned. Police said he's being very cooperative. 

The man who was shot underwent surgery at a hospital. He is expected to survive.
