Man shot, killed by driver after car crash in West Detroit

DETROIT – Detroit police say a man was shot and killed Saturday night by a driver who hit his car on Detroit's west side.

Police say the victim, Demario Tompkins, 26, was with his girlfriend and their 1-year-old baby, driving a car on Interstate 96 near Greenfield Road when the car was side swiped by a gold Chevy Impala.

We were coming home from Chuck E. Cheese, from a birthday party," Tompkins' girlfriend said. "I was on my way to work and it just happened."

The two cars exited the freeway and stopped at a traffic light. The woman in the car that was hit started to argue with the other driver when that driver pulled out a gun and fired several shots, hitting the other man in the head.

"I was holding his head with my shirt to try to stop the blood," Tompkins' girlfriend said.

The woman drove to the 6th Precinct to get help, but the man died from his injuries, according to authorities.

Police are searching for the gold Impala driven by the shooter during the incident.
