'Mass Mobs' bring the crowds to Detroit Catholic churches

DETROIT – Flash mobs are a thing of the past as 'Mass Mobs' get their start in Detroit.

The Detroit Mass Mob is showcasing historic Detroit churches, and giving them a financial boost at the same time, all by asking church-goers to show up.

The Sacred Heart Major Seminary is usually used by priests-in-training at the Seminary but today the Detroit Mass Mob asked people to pack the beautiful chapel for a chance to gather, worship, and build relationships within the community.

Today, Catholics and people of all faiths from around the area got to enjoy the chapel’s soaring arches and the largest collection of Pewabic tiles in the state.

That’s one reason why Mass Mob organizers encourage people to bring a camera to mass to snap photos.

As if the beautiful architecture isn't enough to showcase these Detroit Catholic churches, a full house means when worshipers pass the collection basket, the parish hosting the Mass Mob gets a much needed financial lift.

So far, 23 Mass Mobs have been held and $302,000 collected to help those 23 Detroit churches.

The next Mass Mob? Organizers say look for the announcement on their Facebook page and Twitter feed.
