He was excited to see his owners Wednesday at a veterinary clinic in Romeo. When the Hayden family rushed the dog to the clinic on Friday night he had lost 20 pounds and was near death.

Shannon and Chuck Hayden's sons found their beloved family dog hog-tied to a post. Chester suffered terrible injuries.

"Somebody put some thought into this," said Chuck Hayden.

The family said the German shorthaired pointer went missing July 12 from their home in Kenockee Township, east of Imlay City. They insist he's not a problem. They say he doesn't bark and no one ever has complained when he runs the open spaces behind the family's property.

The family passed out flyers and put alerts on the Internet. A week later, the family heard whimpering coming from the woods behind their home.

Chester was found with his front and hind legs bound with wire that's used for an electric fence.

"I think it's just a sick person who finds this kind of thing fun, I guess," said Shannon Hayden.

Police are investigating. They don't have a suspect right now but do have some evidence with the wire.
