Michigan fraternity members face charges in ski resort damage

The Otsego County Prosecutor's Office has issued charges against three members of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity at the University of Michigan in connection to the destruction of property in January at Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Mich.

Those charged include the fraternity president, treasurer and another member. The president and treasurer face charges of drugs and alcohol consumption by minors on the resort premises and the other fraternity member faces a felony charge of malicious destruction of building more than $1,000, but less than $20,000.

The Prosecutor's Office plans to issue malicious destruction of building charges against more fraternity members "upon the receipt of additional identification information."

The Sigma Alpha Mu International Board has voted to permanently suspend the chapter at the university in Ann Arbor.

Six fraternities and sororities from the school damaged doors, furniture, fixtures and carpet at Treetops and Boyne Highlands in January. Damage, legal fees and other expenses will cost about $430,000 at Treetops Resort in Gaylord. About $30,000 in damage was done to 12 condos at Boyne Highlands near Petoskey.
