Michigan lawmakers consider 80MPH highway speed limit

Michigan lawmakers are exploring the possibility of raising the speed limit to 80 miles per hour on rural freeways.

Critics say the increased speed limit would put lives at risk.  Supporters say people drive at the speed they feel is safe and don't always follow the posted speed limits.

Raising the speed limit to 80 would only apply to rural segments of freeways.

One expert from the Michigan National Motorists Association said raising the speed limit can reduce tailgating, excess passing, passing on the right and other bad driving behaviors.

The Standing Committee Meeting of Transportation and Infrastructure will meet next week to discuss the issue.

This is the third time it's been discussed by state lawmakers.

It currently sits at the committee level and needs to be approved before being voted on by state house members.
