Police: Man opens fire on residents with AK-47 style rifle in Pontiac

Derick Jones, 46, arrested after fleeing police, tossing rifle out of van

PONTIAC, Mich. – A 46-year-old man is in custody Thursday after police say he opened fire on residents with an AK-47 style rifle.

Deputies responded to a call of an intoxicated man threatening to shoot people on the 200 block of Bondale Ave in Pontiac. Two victims, age 71 and 67, told police a man fired rounds at them and they had no idea who he was. The victims said the man went into his van and came out with an AK-47 and started shooting.

While en route to the address, deputies spotted a van matching the description of the suspect's vehicle. Deputies tried to stop the van, but the driver took off.

During the chase, police say the driver threw a rifle out of the van before it lost a tire and came to a stop near Michigan and N. Paddock.

Derick Jones was taken into custody without incident. Police say the weapon Jones tossed out was a Maadi Semi-automatic Model 5413 Rifle.

Three shell casings were also found after police returned to the scene of the crime. Police say Jones already has numerous felony convictions.

In 1998 he pled guilty to assault, in 2003 Jones was charged with possession of cocaine and in 2009 he was charged with discharging a weapon in or at a building.

Jones was charged Wednesday with several counts including: felonious assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and fleeing and eluding police.

He was arraigned in district court and bond was set at $25,000 dollars cash.
