Milford woman charged with beating husband, dog with crowbar

VILLAGE OF MILFORD, Mich. – A 58-year-old Milford woman used a crowbar to beat her husband, who has Alzheimer's, and the family dog to stop their suffering, police said.

Yvonne Cortis was arraigned Wednesday on charges of assault with intent to murder and animal killing or torturing. Her bond was set at $1 million.

Police said she called 911 Monday night to report that her husband and dog had been hurt.

"While officers were speaking with Yvonne, she admitted to them that she struck them both with the crowbar. She said that they were both sick and was putting them out of their misery," Sgt. Scott Tarasiewicz told the court during Cortis' arraignment.

Tarasiewicz said Cortis' husband, 68-year-old Gregory Cortis is on life support.

A court representative said the dog is being put down.

Cortis is also not a U.S. citizen. The court said she has a green card.
