Monroe police: Mom left kid out in cold while doing heroin in restaurant bathroom

MONROE, Mich. – An arrest warrant is expected to be issued Monday night for a Belleville woman who police say overdosed in a McDonald's bathroom in Monroe while one of her kids was out in the car in sub-zero temperatures.

Police say the woman left her 5-year-old daughter in the car Wednesday -- with wind chills whipping up to minus 30 degrees -- while she got high on heroin in the restaurant bathroom.

"We found a piece of string around her arm, there was a burnt spoon, and a syringe," said Sgt. Charles McCormick, of the Monroe Police Department.

It was 4:15 in the afternoon and southeast Michigan wind chills were well below zero when the 37-year-old woman was found slumped over in the bathroom stall. The discovery was made by the woman's other daughter.

"She went into the bathroom looking for mom, seeing her underneath the door," said McCormick.

That's when employees heard the girl scream. For Monroe, a city fighting a growing heroin problem, it's still a little bit of a shock.

The girls are with their father while Child Protective Services investigates. Their mother likely is going to face charges of child neglect and drug possession.

"If there are other family involved, I'd say the kids should go to them," said

The employees at the McDonald's also rushed to the rescue. Monroe police say they took care of the kids until help arrived.
