More than 400 plants confiscated from illegal marijuana-grow operation on Detroit's east side

Major illegal marijuana grow operation uncovered

DETROIT – A major illegal marijuana grow operation was uncovered Tuesday night near Van Dyke and 8 Mile roads on Detroit's east side.

More than 400 plants were confiscated from a warehouse, officials said. The total street value of the plants is close to $1 million, according to officials.

Detroit police said they got a tip from a citizen and shot down the illegal operation.

The lead officer on the case said marijuana laws have let things get a little foggy.

"This is not how this is supposed to work," he said. "This is not how it's supposed to operate. The medical marijuana laws are being taken advantage of."

He said the plants were destined to end up at one of the many dispensaries downtown.
