Mother of downtown Detroit shooting victim speaks

Curtis Goodman, 24, shot early Saturday morning outside Executive Cigar Bar

DETROIT – Detroit police continue to search for a group of men involved in a deadly shootout that happened downtown early Saturday morning.

It happened outside the Executive Cigar Bar near Campus Martius, where witnesses said stray bullets hit parked cars.

The victim's mother spoke Sunday night with Local 4 and shared her heartbreak.

Curtis Goodman, 24, went out Friday night for a birthday party, but he never made it home. His family said he rarely went out, but he loved his job at Chrysler and loved playing basketball.

"I got a call at two o'clock in the morning, never expecting anything like this," said Goodman's mother, Chloris Gary.

A young woman who had been out that night with Curtis called his mother in a panic.

"She told me that I just needed to get down there," said Gary. "So when I get this call I'm trying to call his phone. He's not answering."

She received a call minutes later that would change her life.

"They are telling me, 'Your baby is dead,' and of course at that point I'm going crazy," said Gary.

She started driving to the Executive Cigar Bar at Cadillac Square and Randolph.

"On the way down the street I saw police everywhere and I saw it all roped off, and I just knew then something was not right," Gary said.

Gary waited behind police tape for four hours.

"My son's dead body stayed in the car for those four hours that I sat there and waited," said Gary. "I didn't want to go over and see it because it would have just been too much for me."

Gary said 20 minutes before the bar closed Goodman and his friends got into an altercation with a group of five men. They followed Goodman and his friends out the door and started fighting in the parking lot. As the friends raced to get into the car the group of men opened fire.

"They got them while they were in the car, trying to pull off," said Gary. "Shots were fired and one of the shots hit him in the head."

Goodman died at the scene. His friends shot at the group of men while another friend lay injured after being hit in the head with a bottle.

Gary has a final plea for anyone who may have seen something early Saturday morning.

"Please just help catch whoever did this to my son because he did not deserve this. He did not deserve this at all," said Gary.

Detroit police told Local 4 on Sunday afternoon someone went into the police station and spoke with investigators. Police would not say if that person was a witness or was involved in the shooting.

Police said they are also looking at surveillance video from that night. So far there's only a vague description of the men involved. One of the men is said to have dreadlocks. Detroit police are asking for witnesses to come forward.
