Mother sentenced in 7-year-old's abuse death

Immanuel Foster died last year after suffering from malnutrition, abuse, authorities say

DETROIT – A mother was sentenced Tuesday to spend decades in prison after she was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, torture and child abuse charges in her 7-year-old son's death.

Victoria Foster, 23, and her then-boyfriend Cory Rimson, 29, were charged when the boy, Immanuel Foster, died Oct. 24, 2014, at a hospital after losing consciousness in Rimson's Detroit home on Richton Street.

A medical examiner testified that the boy was severely malnourished -- only weighing 27 pounds when he died -- had 57 bruises on his body, gangrene on his feet and pneumonia.

Foster told police she had left her son with Rimson while she worked in Saginaw and wasn't aware of the abuse.

A jury convicted her of involuntary manslaughter, torture and first-degree child abuse.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Qiana Lillard called Foster "disgusting" and accused her of setting up a hospice situation for her son -- giving him the bare minimum necessities of life until his death.

Lillard sentenced to 27 to 50 years in prison for the torture and child abuse charges, and 5 to 15 years for the manslaughter charged.

Rimson was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse. Rimson was not the biological father of Immanuel, but does have another child with Foster. Lillard sentenced to serve 10 to 15 years in prison on the manslaughter charge and 5 to 10 years concurrently on the child abuse charge.

"There won't ever be a time that I won't miss him or think about him," Rimson told the court.

He also apologized to Immanuel's extended family. "It hurts me, but I know I don't hurt like they do," he said.
