2nd person arrested in fatal shooting of Detroit mother

17-year-old suspect arrested, charged

DETROIT – Detroit police now have a second person in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old woman who died just moments after picking up her son from basketball practice on the city's east side.

Police on Friday said they had 18-year-old Rayvon Smith in custody. They had been looking for him as a known associate to 17-year-old Ralph Anthony Marshall, who is charged in the shooting.

Erica Garner was in her car Wednesday evening outside the old 8 Mile Light Guard Armory when she was shot.

Her 11-year-old got into the car without realizing what had happened. After Garner drove a block, she got out of the car and tried flagging down another car for help before collapsing.

Garner was taken to the hospital, but died.

Her son was able to give police an accurate description of the shooter. A 17-year-old suspect was located at a nearby bus stop and arrested, police said.

Marshall was arrested and arraigned on the following charges: felony murder, carjacking and felony firearm. He is accused of fatally shooting the woman. Police said he fled on foot but eventually was arrested.

Garner worked at the Armory as a custodian. She also has a 15-year-old daughter.

Anyone with information on the man in the picture is asked to call Detroit police at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP.
