Debris from plane scattered for miles, AP says

Sixteen people are dead in military plane crash in LeFlore County, Mississippi, according to Fred Randle, county emergency management director. Randle said all 16 victims were on the plane.

At least five people were killed when a military transport plane crashed in Mississippi Monday, The Associated Press and Fox News reported.

Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks told the AP that the C-130 transport crashed about 85 miles north of Jackson.

At least five of the of the nine people on board were confirmed dead, he said. Authorities were still searching for others at the crash site.

The crash was reported at about 4 p.m. CDT, Greenwood Fire Chief Marcus Banks told the AP.  Debris from the plane was scattered for miles.

Officials told the AP they didn’t know what caused the crash.
