DETROIT – James Craig will become the new chief of the Detroit Police Department on July 1.
He is leaving his job as the police chief in Cincinnati. The Local 4 Defenders traveled to Cincinnati to sample opinions of residents of that city about Craig's work as police chief.
Marilyn Wilcox gave Craig high marks.

"I'm glad he got the majority of the drug dealers off the street," Wilcox said.
Kenneth Martin said Craig could have done more, but he wishes Craig well in Detroit.
"The police in Cincinnati are not doing the best job they could have. Maybe he will do a better job up there," Martin said.
The Defenders spoke to some Cincinnati residents on hidden camera to get candid opinions.
One woman said Craig made the city safer.
"Getting more people to come downtown, seeing a lot more security and police on patrol, so he is doing a good job, I would say," that woman said.
Another Cincinnati resident said Craig got the job done.
"He was a no nonsense guy," that Cincinnati resident said.
While the job as chief of police in Detroit is a move up for James Craig, it is also a homecoming. He was raised in Detroit, has family here, and got his start as a police officer in the city.
