New partnership promises affordable housing in Downtown Detroit

Bedrock partners with Detroit to provide affordable housing

DETROIT – Many residents assume they can't afford the rent that comes with a Downtown Detroit view, but a new partnership might change some minds.

The city is teaming up with Bedrock on two new developments aimed at seniors and people with lower incomes.

A new 54-unit building from Bedrock will be built at 124 Alfred Street in Detroit. It's just blocks away from the Little Caesars Arena site, and it's dedicated to seniors whose incomes are between 30 percent and 60 percent of the area median income.

Another building -- 28Grand off Woodward Avenue -- is being called a mixed-income development, meaning 85 units will be dedicated to households making 60 percent of the area median income.

Both buildings are part of a new commitment from Bedrock to the city of Detroit.

"It's us partnering with the city for affordable housing," said Dan Mullen, president of Bedrock. "We plan to build 3,500 units in the next few years, and 700 of those will be affordable housing."

Arthur Jemison, the director of housing and revitalization for Detroit, said it's important to provide affordable housing to residents.

"Those commitments to area median incomes are important to keep rents affordable in Downtown," Jemison said.

Bedrock has also committed to preserving existing buildings.
