Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Evan Reed met a 45-year-old woman two days before Opening Day on Saturday, March 29 at 5th Avenue Bar in Royal Oak, sources confirm with Local 4.
Reed and the woman then went to MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit. Police sex crimes investigators are going over video from the casino which reportedly shows Reed with the woman.
Sources say 28-year-old Reed and the woman went to Reed's hotel room and he left the next morning, Sunday, March 30, leaving the woman in the room.
The 45-year-old woman now is telling police that she was sexually assaulted by the professional athlete.
Reed has not been charged as the investigation continues. He is with the Tigers in Los Angeles for a west coast road trip. He isn't due back in Detroit until late Sunday or early Monday.
The Tigers released this statement:
"The organization is aware of the very serious allegation that has been made against pitcher Evan Reed. This allegation is concerning and we are aware of an on-going investigation. It would be inappropriate for the ball club to comment further at this time."
Police say they plan to interview Reed when he returns to Detroit. Sources say that sex crimes investigators will be collecting DNA from the woman.
It's standard that they will get a search warrant to take Reed's DNA, too.
However, so far sources say investigators do no have enough evidence to support a rape charge.
