Here is Jewell's full statement:

"Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family, friends and all of those who worked with UAW member Donald Megge, 53, of Sterling Heights, who died this morning in a tragic accident shortly after starting his shift at Fiat Chrysler's Jefferson Avenue North Assembly Plant today.

Megge, a millwright and wastewater operator, died while he was performing regular preventative maintenance during a shift that started at 5:30 a.m. He was working alone and discovered at about 6:30 this morning.

The incident remains under investigation by state and federal health and safety officials, and union and company health and safety professionals."

Chrysler released its own statement calling this a "tragic accident" at the waste water treatment portion of the plant.

"FCA US is deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took the life of an 18-year employee at Jefferson North this morning and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family. The safety of our employees is our first priority, and we will continue to work in cooperation with the authorities, including MIOSHA, to investigate the circumstances surrounding this terrible tragedy.

The 53-year-old employee was working in the plant's onsite waste water treatment facility, performing maintenance on a waste water filter press. Until we complete our investigation, it would be inappropriate to speculate on how this accident occurred. Counselors are onsite to assist employees as needed."
