Plea deal expected for Detroit man accused of amassing arsenal for terrorist attack

Sebastian Gregerson expected to take plea deal instead of going to trial

DETROIT – A Detroit man who federal officials said is an ISIS sympathizer who wanted to carry out a Jihadi attack is expected to take a plea deal instead of going to trial.

Documents filed Tuesday by his attorney show that Sebastian Gregerson is changing his court appointment on March 30 from a pretrial hearing to a plea hearing.

Federal court documents show that the 29-year-old has withdrawn all pending pretrial motions and will cut a deal with prosecutors.

Gregerson was arrested last summer in Monroe after an FBI investigation found that he was collecting an arsenal for a Jihad-type attack as an ISIL sympathizer, authorities said.

Gregerson allegedly tried to buy grenades from an undercover FBI agent.

Undercover agents said he had grenade launchers, knives, guns and more military-style weaponry. All the weapons are legal to own, but federal officials said Gregerson intended to kill.

According to the indictment, Gregerson received about 26 ounces of Composition B "with knowledge and intent that said explosive materials would be used to kill, injure, and intimidate a person and to unlawfully damage and destroy property."

Gregerson's original defense was that he was a military historian and an avid outdoorsman. He is charged with two counts of unregistered possession of a destructive device, unlicensed receipt of an explosive device and receipt of explosive materials with intent to harm.

Gregerson's attorney and the U.S. Attorney's Office didn't return calls for comment.

The plea agreement hearing is set for March 30.
