Novi police make arrest in jewelry store smash-and-grab robbery; 2 suspects still at large

Men stole 2 watches after smashing display case with hammer, police say

NOVI, Mich. – Police have made an arrest in connection with a smash-and-grab robbery Saturday evening at Tapper’s jewelry store in Twelve Oaks Mall.

A 26-year-old man turned himself in to police Monday night. The man allegedly kicked out the two-rear windows of a police cruiser and assaulted an officer after surrendering to authorities, according to police.

Two other men are still at large.

“He managed to escape the officers and took on a brief foot pursuit where he was eventually apprehended again after a brief struggle which resulted in one officer being bit and both officers being scratched,” Novi Police Sgt. Scott Baetens said.

Three men were seen walking into the store at about 5:20 p.m. and smashed a display case with a small hammer. The men took two watches and fled on foot, according to police.

Officers received reports of shot being fired inside the mall, but later determine that no shots were fired and that people had panicked after hearing the display case shatter.

Shoppers were evacuated from the mall into the parking lot.

No injuries were reported.
