Redford Twp. police have escapee back in custody

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A man who escaped from custody while walking from jail to the 17th District Court on Tuesday in Redford Township is back in custody, police said.

The man, identified by police as 22-year-old Justin Baldwin, was due in court Tuesday for an armed robbery charge as a habitual offender, police said. However, he escaped custody before police could get him to the courthouse.

The Redford Police Department is located right next to the 17th District Courthouse off of Beech Daly Road just south of 5 Mile Road.

Baldwin was back in custody after a couple hours of searching. Police caught up to him near Aubrey and 5 Mile Road, which is not far from the district court.

A resident in the neighborhood, Paul Schilling, helped catch him. He said he held the man for police.

"I was outside picking up my cat and taking him in and all of the sudden I saw him break through the wall and he was running. I jumped on my bike, which I just got from my girlfriend for my 63rd birthday, and I was able to keep up with him coming down the streets and I come down the alley and he was in the backyard. Police went that way and I came this way ... I jumped up on the rail, he was standing there and I said, 'Put your hands up!' He had one cuff off so I grabbed him by the one cuff and held his hands together ... and the police came in and tackled him," said Schilling.
