Flashpoint: Congress members talk Iran, budget issues

DETROIT – Devin Scillian returned from Cuba for this week's episode of Flashpoint. He was joined by Congress members Mike Bishop (R - Rochester) and Brenda Lawrence (D - Southfield) to talk about some of the biggest issues on Capitol Hill.

Devin asked them about President Barack Obama's plan with Iran. Bishop said Iran calls our country "The Great Satan" and that we can't trust any deal made with the country. He said the current situation is scary.

Lawrence said this has been a five-year negotiated deal and that the deal allows the U.S. to regulate and have influence on what goes on. She said there are many stakeholders in this negotiation. She said she hasn't made her decision yet on which way to vote, because there are some parts of the deal that she doesn't like.

In the second segment, Devin asked about the problems surrounding the budget and how it's connected to highways. Bishop said there has to be a way to address and pay for transportation within the budget. He said the members of Congress have a duty to get the budget figured out.

Lawrence talked about the effect these budget talks could have on education and other important issues.

The experts also touched on climate change and how much we really control the climate. Bishop said environmental change is very important in Michigan but that humans can have a major impact on climate.

He said people in Asia put no emphasis on climate change. Lawrence said our government should be a leader in that change.

After the break, Devin was joined by Nolan Finley, of the Detroit News, and Stephen Henderson, of the Detroit Free Press. He asked them about immigration and the enforcement of our immigration laws.

Finley says it's impossible to send everyone back, but that the immigration laws need to be enforced. Henderson talked about Trump's comments on immigration and the racial implications. He said the U.S. should keep working to help the economy in Mexico so that people don't want to come over.

Regarding the road plan, Finley said a deal should have happened this week, and that officials came as close to a decision as they have since this process starting.

Henderson talked about how Lansing can't pinpoint the one issue that needs to be addressed and the other issues that keep being dragged into the roads plan.
