PONTIAC, Mich. – A 28-year-old Auburn Hills woman never imagined she would be spending the final weeks of her pregnancy recovering from a gunshot wound.
"I'm just thankful to be alive, and thankful that my daughter is alive," the woman, who asked only to be identified as Victoria, told Local 4 during an interview Monday. She is due in September to give birth to a girl.
Victoria and her boyfriend, Anthony Williams, were watching a fireworks shows Friday from a spot at Woodward Avenue and South Boulevard in Pontiac when gunfire erupted.
"I kind of looked over and I saw a woman standing there. That's when I felt something hit my face," Victoria said. "I couldn't open my eye and I fell down to the ground. The blood just wouldn't stop coming."
Williams said a crowd of about two dozen people started coming at them.
"They stopped right past the passenger side of our car, and 10 seconds later I heard two quick pops," he said. "I looked to my left and she's on the ground."
At the hospital, doctors told them the baby will be fine, but Victoria lost vision in her left eye.
"The fragments went into my nose and went into my eye," Victoria said.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is still looking for the shooter, who they describe as a black woman in her 20s, about 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds. She was wearing a red hat with long braided hair, a white T-shirt, long red shorts and red shoes.
