OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A felon was wrongly released Wednesday from the Oakland County Jail prompting a manhunt to apprehend the prisoner.

Johnny Rodgers II, 25, was released in error at about 6 p.m. and authorities are currently searching for him. He was serving a seven to 15 year sentence for committing assault with intent to murder, robbery and felony firearms violations out of Wayne County in 2014.

He is believed to be in Detroit. Officials said he was last seen in the area of 7 Mile Road and Livernois Avenue last night. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and Timberland boots.

Rodgers was in the custody of Oakland County while on a writ for a court appearance. He should have been returned to the custody of the Michigan Department of Corrections but instead was released from jail.

“He shouldn’t have been released,” Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said. “The file says ‘MDOC retainer’ right on it.”

He has a tattoo on his right arm that says: "Live for everything die for nothing."

Rodgers should be considered dangerous and should not be approached. Officials said he has no money or cellphone.

The Michigan Department of Corrections, Michigan State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service are working in conjunction to apprehend the prisoner.

Rodgers' mother called authorities and alerted them of the release after he showed up at her house near 7 Mile Road and Livernois Avenue.

The earliest Rodgers could have been released was 2024.

“For whatever reason we have a process in place; two deputies in the booking area always review the file before anybody is released,” McCabe said. “We don’t know what the breakdown is. There is an internal investigation ongoing as to what occurred.”

Anyone with information or who has seen Rodgers is asked to call police at 1-800-TURN-1-IN or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. There is a cash reward being offered for information leading to his capture.
