The numbers also show an increase in sexual misconduct reports to the Office for Institutional Equity, which handles investigations. During the time frame, 172 were reported, up from 129 the previous year.

The report said it's believed that the increase is the result of enhanced awareness on campus of sexual misconduct issues and of how to report concerns.

The U.S. Education Department has been investigating how the University of Michigan and dozens of schools nationwide address sexual abuse allegations.
