Residents angered by house fires in West Detroit neighborhood

Police searching for arsonist

DETROIT – Detroit arson investigators are trying to catch whoever lit two houses on fire Sunday morning.

The houses are across the street from each other on Spokane Avenue on Detroit's west side. Firefighters were called at around 7:00 a.m.

"Look at our neighborhood, it looks like a freaking war zone," said resident Max Peterson as he watched the homes burn.

While only two were set on fire, a third was destroyed when the fire jumped next door. The two houses that were set on fire were vacant.

"We'd like to catch whoever is doing it, that's for sure," said Detroit senior fire Chief Jack Wiley.

Investigators said they think the arsonist stuck around to watch.

"There were guys taking pictures," Wiley said. "So we need to figure out what happened over here."

The neighbors are angry.

"Who is doing this, all these young kids?" said Barbara Terry. "What are they doing it for?"

"Believe me, we've been talking about, we're going to find this guy," Peterson said.

Most importantly, they're afraid someone will eventually get hurt.

"This house over here that they set on fire, it's empty, but the one next to it, it's not empty," Peterson said. "They're going to hurt somebody."

Anyone who has any information on the arsons is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department.
