ROMULUS, Mich. – The city of Romulus is shifting gears into reverse on plans to let a TV production company record illegal drag racing this coming weekend.
The show "Street Outlaws" promotes itself as illegal street racing, racing challengers and racing from police.
The show had a deal with the city Romulus, but had kept the arrangements quiet.
The Romulus police and fire departments said they were satisfied with plans to record on Smith Road near Merriman on Saturday night.
The show's producers reportedly assured the city there would be no real racing and that everything would be staged.
But one local racer, who signed a waver for the show, told Local 4 that was not the plan.
"As far as I know the racing is real. The location is set up like a movie or TV show. Security, medics, production, etc.," the racer said.
Wayne Count, which includes the city of Romulus, is serious about cracking down on street racing, even to the point of seizing the cars of racers.
Tim Keyes, the Romulus Director of Economic Development, suggested the city was misled by the producers.
"This is not what we signed up for and we have no desire to more forward with this," Keyes wrote.
