Man charged with open murder for fatal shooting in Royal Oak

Kirk Leach shot Kenith Walter multiple times Monday, police say

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A man is facing an open murder charge for the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old Madison Heights man.

Kirk Leach was arraigned Thursday morning. He's also charged with possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Judge Derek Meinecke denied Leach bond and set his preliminary hearing for Nov. 13.

Royal Oak Police Detective Donald Van Ochten said Leach shot Kenith Walter multiple times Monday at a home on Fern Street.

Walter died at Beaumont Hospital.

Leach was arrested the same day of the shooting in Garden City.

Police said Leach has prior misdemeanor convictions for possession of marijuana, retail fraud, driving with a suspended license, driving without a license and possession of open intoxicants in a motor vehicle.

This is the second deadly shooting in Royal Oak this month.
