Royal Oak police: Woman's ex-boyfriend breaks in, holds knife to her throat

Woman's current boyfriend stabs ex-boyfriend who, police say, broke into home

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A woman was attacked by her knife-wielding ex-boyfriend early Monday morning inside her current boyfriend's home in the 1000 block of East Fourth Street in Royal Oak.

Police say the woman, her boyfriend and another male friend arrived home about 3 a.m. Monday and noticed the back door had been forced open. They also found zip ties and duct tape in the kitchen. Suddenly, the woman's ex-boyfriend emerged from a closet and grabbed her. He held a razor knife to her throat and had a hatchet in his other hand, police said.

He was not immediately recognized by the victims because he was wearing a mask, hoodie and rubber gloves.

When the woman began to fight the attacker, her boyfriend, who armed himself with a knife, stabbed him. He was held on the floor until police officers arrived at the home.

Police: Struggle heard on 911 call

The 911 call had informed police that an unknown man was holding a knife to a woman's throat. Police say the homeowner and his friend could be heard on the call struggling with the intruder.

Attacker in critical condition

The intruder was transported to Beaumont Hospital where he remains listed in critical condition. The woman suffered minor injuries to her hand and neck. She was treated by paramedics at the home.

Police are seeking home invasion, unlawful imprisonment and felonious assault charges against the man, who is 21 years old.
