Royal Oak responding to reports of natural gas odor near Coolidge Highway, 14 Mile Road

A strong odor has been reported in the area of 14 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Royal Oak Fire Department and Engineering Division personnel are working to identify the cause of a strong odor in the area of Coolidge Highway and 14 Mile Road.

Consumers Energy has responded to many complaints of a natural gas smell, but evidence of natural gas hasn't been discovered.

Representatives from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality have walked through the area.

The MDEQ has been working with representatives of the Oakland County Water Resources Commission to examine a county interceptor drain that runs through the area. Sewage samples have been taken from the drain, but laboratory analysis results are incomplete.

A meeting will be held early next week with the affected stakeholders, including  the city of Royal Oak, city of Birmingham, Royal Oak Fire Department, Birmingham Fire Department, Royal Oak Department of Public Services, Birmingham Department of Public Services, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Oakland County Water Resources, to discuss a course of action and any results.
