Security guard won't face charges in deadly shooting at Detroit apartments

Wayne County prosecutor says guard acted in self

DETROIT – A security guard who shot and killed a man at a Detroit apartment building in August won't be charged because the act has been ruled self defense.

Thomas McIntosh, 55, got into a confrontation with the guard at 3 a.m. on Aug. 27 at the Freedom Place apartments on West Warren.

McIntosh, who lived in the apartments, appeared to be intoxicated and threatened to hurt the guard, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.

The 77-year-old security guard warned McIntosh that he had a registered handgun, but McIntosh continued to walk toward the guard and threaten him.

The guard fired a single shot that killed McIntosh.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy said there were two independent witnesses who saw the shooting and corroborated the guard's claim that the shooting was in self defense.
