Seventh-grader honored for saving boy from drowning

Delaney lifted boy above water so he could breathe

WALLED LAKE, Mich. – Delaney Horiski, a seventh-grader at Clifford Smart Middle School, was recently recognized at the Walled Lake Schools Board of Education meeting because she saved a life by doing the right thing.

When Delaney was camping over Labor Day with her family, a boy who was swimming in the lake got his foot wrapped around the rope that began to pull him underwater. Delaney saw this and dove into the water several times to try to save the boy, but she couldn't.

She told others to get park security members and dove into the water again, this time lifting the boy above water from underneath. She did this several times until a boat came and cut the rope to free the boy.

"Delaney never had any reservations about saving another person, nor was she concerned with her own personal safety," said Kenneth Gutman, the superintendent. "She is a really good swimmer and she used her skills to help another person."

Gutman and State Rep. Klint Kesto thanked and congratulated Delaney for her mature, swift actions that saved another person.
