Police say guard shoots would-be robbers at Bank of America branch off Gratiot Avenue

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – One person is dead after a shoot-out involving an armored truck guard at a bank in Clinton Township.

Police said the guard was confronted by two men in the parking lot of the Bank of America branch at 37370 Gratiot Avenue, which is just north of 16 Mile Road.

Police said one of the men was armed with a revolver and was able to get some money from the guard before shots rang out. Police haven't said if it was the would-be robber or the guard who started shooting first.

One of the suspects was killed and another fled in a stolen silver minivan.

Police said the guard shot out of the windows of the minivan and possibly injured the second man. The van was found a few blocks away from the bank near Remick Drive and Stair Street. A search is underway for the second man.

Dozens of bullet casing markers are out in the bank's parking lot.

Andrea Hernandez was on her way to a doctor's visit when she saw the shooting.

"We were driving south of Gratiot and we heard a loud pop. When I looked, I saw an armored car guy in a stance and I saw him shoot three more times. I saw the deceased laying on the floor," Andrea Hernandez said. "The armored truck guy got back in the truck and closed the door until all the sheriffs and police and everyone got here. The guy was still alive, and we were going to try to help him, but they were like, ‘Back up, back up.'"

Her husband, Jeffery, said he feels like the area has becoming more and more violent.

"It's getting bad out here. People don't have money and they're doing a lot of stupid things to get it," he said.
