DETROIT – Two men are in custody Tuesday night after a Michigan Department of Corrections officer was fired on while attempting to make an arrest in Detroit.
Three men committed multiple robberies Monday night, taking cellphones and other items.
Officers called one of the victim's phones Tuesday and one of the thieves answered not knowing it was a set up.
When they met at an agreed place around 3:30 p.m., the suspect realized what was happening and as a Michigan Department of Corrections officer attempted to make an arrest and the suspect fired a shot, striking the officer's vehicle.
The gunman ran into an apartment in the 2400 block of Woodmere Street in Southwest Detroit and was barricaded inside with another suspect.
SWAT officers responded to the home. Several streets around the area were blocked off for nearly 4 hours.
"The unit was a 22 unit apartment building so the concern we had initially was where the suspects were inside of the building," said Detroit Police Commander Elvin Barren. "We did have negotiations with our hostage negotiators where they called the cellphone. The suspect answered and he attempted to pretend that he was not in the location."
Police took one of the suspects into custody soon after the situation began. The second suspect was not captured until hours later.
"The perpetrator gave up on his own accord and then the second suspect gave up once he exited that apartment," Barren said.
No one was injured in the incident.
Police said the firearm had not been found.
Both teens will face charges of assault with intent to murder.
