Southfield police: Shot fired inside AMC Star theater

Police find bullet casing inside theater

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Southfield police say a shot was fired Friday evening inside the AMC Star movie theater near Telegraph and 12 Mile roads.

Police said two men were in an altercation when one of them made a gesture as if he was grabbing for a gun. The other man took out his own gun and fired a shot at him.

"A gentleman walks up the stairs and has music playing loud on his phone," said movie-goer Aaron Amos. "While he's walking up the stairs a guy looks at him and he says with an explicative, 'Who are you looking at?' and the guy pulls out his gun at the moment he pulled out his gun. The gentleman sitting down also pulls out his gun as well and he shoots."

Only one shot was fired. Police said the man playing the music who might have been shot fled the scene. Witnesses said the suspect who fired the gun was arrested and is cooperating with police.

Police found a bullet casing inside the theater, but no bullet or evidence of blood were found.

Local 4 News spoke to other movie-goers outside who had no idea what happened.

"We were just leaving like normal and then there was just nobody in there," said John Rexroth. "We came out and the cop sitting in the car was just telling people it's closed."

"As people were trying to open the door they said, 'It's closed due to a police matter.' You couldn't really see what was going on inside," said Benita Denim.

"You never think this type of thing would happen while you're watching a movie," said another movie-goer.

Police are reviewing surveillance videos.
