State of emergency extended in Macomb County due to sinkhole

FRASER, Mich. – The state of emergency in Fraser has been extended, officials in Macomb County announced Friday.

The sinkhole opened up three weeks ago on 15 Mile Road and condemned three homes in the affected area.

The county will continue to apply for various state and federal funds for the welfare of the residents. The costs associated with the natural disaster have already topped over $100 million.

Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller briefed the Board of Commissioners for the first time since the sewer line collapsed Friday. Officials said crews are working toward a fix by building a bypass, stabilizing the soil and placing product disinfectant in six locations in case they have to discharge raw sewage again.

Senators, state representatives and the Board of Commissioners will be touring the site Sunday to see first-hand why state funding is needed.
