Stranger danger issued in West Bloomfield

Police say man approached student who was walking to school

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – Many parents in West Bloomfield are being extra vigilant after a student was approached Wednesday morning by a stranger.

"It's right here in our back yard. I mean I just live right across the street," said Michelle Kam.

Police say the young girl was on her way to West Hills Middle School. She was walking on a boardwalk near the west side of Middlebelt Road just north of Lone Pine Road.

The stranger approached from the opposite way and tried to engage the girl by offering her candy and asking if she would meet him for some tea.

"It's disheartening to hear and it makes you wonder what type of society we have," said Jill Gregg.

The student ran away and school officials called police. Parents were immediately notified by email, which prompted many to talk to their children about stranger danger issues and ways to stay safe.

Police described this person as a white man in his 50s with dark hair. He was wearing sun glasses and workout clothes.

If you have any more information call the West Bloomfield Police Department.

NOTE: Police are investigating whether this incident is connected to a similar one in Birmingham (story here).
