DETROIT – A deadly pursuit on Detroit’s west side ended in two fatalities Monday morning and the crash was caught on surveillance video.
The police chase ended at the corner of Coleman Street and Tireman Avenue, near the Dearborn-Detroit border. Surveillance video at a pharmacy captured the fatal crash.
According to police, officers from the 10th Precinct observed a Dodge Caravan at about 12:50 a.m. driving without a license plate. The van had allegedly struck a pole near Joy Road and Livernois Avenue when officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, and the minivan fled.
Police said the van hit another vehicle, a 2015 Ford Focus, and then several other parked vehicles.
The passenger in the Caravan, a 23-year-old Redford man, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 23-year-old driver, of Detroit, was taken to the hospital in critical condition with multiple injuries, but died from his injuries.
The driver of the Focus, a Detroit man, and his passenger, a Kalamazoo woman, both sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.
"This incident is a terrible tragedy and our condolences go out to all the families involved," Dearborn police Chief Ronald Haddad said.
No officers were injured in the pursuit.
