Teen being held without bond in elderly neighbor's murder

DETROIT – A 17-year-old boy is being held without bond on murder and arson charges related to the death of his elderly neighbor.

George Steward was arraigned Thursday on charges of first-degree murder, felony murder and arson.

Detroit Police have arrested a man believed to be involved in the murder of a 91-year-old.

Prosecutors said Steward attacked 91-year-old Paul Monchnik early Monday morning in his home on Bentler Court, and then set his body and his home on fire.

Monchnik's body was discovered when firefighters extinguished the fire.

"The alleged facts in this case are that the defendant killed his elderly neighbor by beating him and attempting to burn the evidence," said prosecutor Kym Worthy. "The word heinous does not even begin to describe this crime."

Steward's next court date is Dec. 3.
