Teen hit by car while being chased on Detroit's east side, police say

Boy running across street falls, struck by vehicle that fled

DETROIT – Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle in a hit-and-run that injured a teenage boy.

Detroit police said the teen was at a roller-skating rink near south Hampton Street and Alter Road on the east side.

Just after 8 p.m. Saturday, a person or group started chasing the boy away from the rink.

The teen ran across Alter Road and fell. A vehicle hit him moments later.

Local 4 is told the boy's leg was injured. He was responsive when emergency responders took him to St. Johns Hospital.

A pair of sneakers were in the middle of the road where the boy was hit. While the driver fled, other people stayed. Drivers stopped and protected the boy from oncoming traffic until EMS arrived.

The area is not well-lit, as there are no working street lights on the section of Alter Road where the incident took place.

Police are still searching for the driver, but said there is limited information on the vehicle sought.
