DETROIT – A teenager on Detroit's west side was killed Sunday when a gun went off accidentally in his family's home.
It happened at around 8 p.m. at a home near Fenkell Avenue and Meyers Road.
Local 4 News was told that the 15-year-old boy was holding the gun when it accidentally went off. The teen was hit by a bullet and killed.
Their shock and grief was evident as distraught family members tried to comprehend their loss. The teen's mother and siblings were at home when it happened. They found the boy suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Detroit police are investigating who owned the gun and how the high school student was able to get it.
No one was taken into custody.
While the shooting appears to be accidental, Detroit police are investigating.
