Teens steal 2 cars from home, crash 1 into airport fence

Cars were stolen on back-to-back days

VAN BUREN CHARTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Washtenaw police say two 15-year-old boys from Ypsilanti have been taken into custody after they stole two cars from a home and crashed one into the fence at Willow Run Airport.

One of the cars was stolen from the home, in the 700 block of N. Hewitt Road, on Thursday. Police say the suspects got into the home from the side garage door and took the home keys to a 2007 Mercury Milan and took off with the car.

On Friday, there was a break-in at the same home. Suspects broke in through a window and took the keys to a 2007 GMC Van, driving away with that vehicle.

Police took a call of a hit and run on Saturday and deputies tried to stop the fleeing car, which was the stolen GMC Van. After a short pursuit, the van crashed through the airport fence and the suspects tried to run away on foot.

Airport police helped officers catch the two juvenile suspects. Both are being held at the Juvenile Detention Center.

Authorities say both stolen cars have been recovered.
