Taylor police: Driver in deadly weekend hit-and-run turns self in

17-year-old boy dies from injuries

TAYLOR, Mich. – A driver wanted in connection to a hit-and-run crash Saturday evening that injured one teen and killed another has been arrested.

A 35-year-old Taylor man turned himself into police Monday afternoon, police said. He is being held while Taylor police submit a warrant request to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Taylor police take driver into custody after he turned himself in Monday afternoon.

Austin McCumber and Marty Jamie, both 17, were riding a moped on Harold Street when they went through a stop sign at Joan Avenue and were struck by the pickup truck, police said.

The pickup truck's driver didn't stop.

Jamie was treated at a hospital and released, but McCumber was hospitalized in critical condition before passing away.

“It’s not like hitting a squirrel and continue your day. These are two human beings who had good meanings for life," said McCumber's father, Jeff. “Austin didn’t deserve this. His buddy didn’t deserve this. Just do the right thing, man.”

Police released video that was taken from a home surveillance camera that shows the white pickup truck.

Here is a statement released by Taylor police on Tuesday:

"From all accounts, the crash appears to be an accident. The boys disregarded the stop sign. However, the suspected driver failed to stop at the scene of an injury crash and that is the reason he is being held and charges being sought."

It is with a heavy heart that I share this. I've known this young man the majority of his young life. It is always sad...
